Muttham – Creativity- Thy Name is Youth
A piece of Art is immortal and so is human creativity. Short films are as interesting and powerful as short stories. The Tamil short film Muttham by Samuel Mathew only reflects and substantiates the spirit of creativity in the youth of today.
Technically sound, thematically creative, thorough narration, lucid direction and superb production mark the short film Muttham.
Sam –the Hero is an ambitious Loyola College student in his second year of B.com who wants to play for Chennai Super Kings. He is so ambitious and focused on his goal and he even avoids the cozy youth privilege of having a girl friend. Any Hero loves challenges and hence, our Hero. His friends somehow make him accept the challenge of “Getting a Kiss” from a girl friend by 6 PM of the day. He goes in search of a girl –he goes to temple, church, shopping mall and everywhere only to find none.
It is at 5 PM at last when he finds Janani, through a hint from his friend and they decide to meet at the Gandhi statue. As he proceeds, he finds a small school girl crying lost from her mates after a tour and she says she is from Perambur. Sam decides to go to Perambur with the girl to leave her at home instead of Gandhi statue at Marina. He knows he cannot make it with his girl friend before 6. But, Sam gets a sweet kiss “Muttham” from his little girl friend before 6. He sees fulfillment of a purpose than just fun.
The film is so full of wits throughout – especially the dialogues on cricketers, the scene where his first attempt brings him a sister instead of a girl friend, and a girl mistakes Sam for a server taking orders for Coffee and he gets into trouble with his shoe lace at the most important moment. The cinematography by Satish and Editing by Anthony Ruben deserve appreciations.
The film beautifully portrays and conveys a strong striking message that Youth are not useless-they are used less; Youth are precious and they know their purpose and also fun. To summarize, we want more of Samuel Mathews and more such films from Samuel Mathew.
