Kannum Kannum Kollai Adithaal Kaadhal Enru Artham- an electric and ecstatic composition of A.R.Rehman in the movie Thirudaa Thirudaa is also an eclectic piece where one finds eccentric elements from Western and Indian Classical music. The song carries a passionate message in a fast rock and roll style in a sober soft Sivaranjani Raagam that usually conveys melancholy. Easily identified and extensively employed in both Carnatic and Hindusthaani music, the Raagam Sivaranjani has been beautifully utilized in many Tamil movie songs. Vaa Vaa Anbey Anbey in the movie Agninkshtram, Adi Aathaadi in Kadalorakavithaigal, Unnaithaaney Thanjam Enru in Nallavanukku Nallavan, Innisai Paadivarum….the list goes on. The Raagam has the same 5 swaras Sa Re Ga Pa...

When I first attended a concert of Flute Ramani sir, I was spellbound by his mastery over the craft. He began the concert with a kirti in the raagam Hamsadhwani, the very famous “Vatapi Ganapathim Bhaje’ham” composed by Dikshitar. That is what established my strong emotional association with Hamsadhwani. I was so captivated by the pleasantness of the raagam and also the musical eloquence with which Ramani sir delivered it that, to this day Hamsadhwani remains one of my all time favourites. Hamsadhwani is an audava raagam (what we call a pentatonic scale in Western) and is a janya (derivative scale) of Shankarabharanam. It does not feature Madhyamam and Dhaivatham in its aarohana avarohana structure....

Sowkiyama Kanney Sowkiyama…..Sowkiyama Kanney Sowkiyama…….an A.R.Rehman composition from the movie Sangamam is a piece par excellence in the Raagam Maandu. Sowkiyama Kanney – Sangamam This exotic Raagam has in it another hit song Nilaakaaigiradhu from A.R.Rehman in the movie Indira. Anjali Anjali in the movie Duet also has the royal shades of Maandu. Vanna Chindu, an Ilayaraajaa melody from the movie Kovil Kaalai is another Maandu too. If you travel into the realms of Nadigar Thilagam Shivaji’s movie Thiruvilayaadal, there too you find a Maandu in the multiraaga hit Inrorunaal podhumaa and Pengalai nambade kangale in the movie Thooku Thooki. Nilaakaaigiradhu – Indira Having its Hindustani equivalent as Maand, the Raagam has a beautifully designed structure with notes flowing in between small time gaps in an intricate fashion travelling through...

Mayamalavagowlai, a pazhamaivaaintha (ancient) raagam, must be one of the most familiar raagams among the common rasikas I guess. You would’ve definitely heard about it even if your only association with carnatic music is that you have a sibling who learnt carnatic vocals for a couple of months. This is the raagam that is taught to beginners when they learn their sarali varisai, jantai, thaattu, mel sthaayi etc. I am not sure why Purandaradasa chose this raagam when he set out a formal structure of lessons for beginners to learn carnatic music but it sure does give a great feel even when sung without much gamakas and helps sustain your interest as you continue to...

The moment I hear the name Dharmavathi, the first thing that strikes my mind is this one particular scene from the movie Azhagan in which Mammooty gives a hard, tight slap to Madhubala. Ok, before you go like “What the heck, dude?!”, let me explain the context but not before I get to ramble on the evolution of the role of songs in our movies. In the days of Thyagaraja bhagavathar (not to confuse with Saint Thyagaraja), there used to be a song for every two minutes and the movie wouldn’t complete in any time less than three hours. Imagine then how many songs you would have in each movie! Basically, each song conveyed something...

The beauty of Carnatic music lies in its capability to convey fine aspects of human emotions in apt Raagaas or musical scales. Happiness is an emotion so natural to man that he utilizes every occasion to magnify his happiness and make merry. Aananda Bhairavi is one such Raagaa that is apt to convey, magnify and express happiness. No doubt, this conveys the moods of lovers too in our movies. Konjanaal poru thalaivaa…oru vanjikodi ingey varuvaa kannirandil por thoduppaa andha vennilava thorkkadippaa …in the Ajit movie Aasai is Ananda Bhairavi conveying youth ecstasy.
Of several things that music (or rather the pursuit of music) teaches us, one important virtue I feel is Punctuality. One of those days, I was late to my music class by ten minutes and entered the class half-expecting that the day’s lesson will be cancelled for me. My guru nodded his head, signalling me to come inside. Noticeably, he was busy with his flute, playing an alapanai in Kalyani. It’s not very often that you get to listen to your guru performing in class. I was listening to the alapanai earnestly and by the time he finished it with a Thyagaraja kirti “Vasudevayani”, I couldn’t believe that almost an hour had gone by already....
